Botani, also known as Tishinna Viktorovna Belyaeva, is a former student of the Imperial College of Science and Engineering in Grypherburg. After withdrawing from school, she joined Rhodes Island by Operator Zima's recommendation, continuing to study Originium communications while participating in field missions.

I hear strange noises in my headphones when I walk into this office… Doctor, is there a problem with the wiring of your audio equipment? Oh, it's the counter-surveillance system? Sorry, I'll turn off my equipment.
It's windy outside again. When I was a child in Bresk, I always worried about high winds putting out the fire at night. For many years, the sound of the Far North winds woke me from my dreams—does it still happen? Of course not, I'm awake right now. Oh, that's not what you meant?
No, nothing I don't understand. The documents are very clearly written. I look puzzled? Oh, that's because my horns aren't balanced, so it's less tiring if I tilt my head. Are you interested in my redesigned antenna? I can share the blueprints—Oh… nope, it doesn't hurt.
I often see you deep in thought. I envy you. My thoughts are shallow, and so I often realize things after the fact. Examples? Well, for example, it was only when I heard about the news in the Far North that I realized the fact. I'd been accepted into the Imperial College of Science and Engineering, just because it benefited the Grand Duchess politically. Ironic, isn't it?
The people in the cities thought they could keep the tragedy of the mines outside their doors. They're wrong. The city doesn't belong to them. Even their doors don't belong to them. I can hear the footsteps constantly following me, from Breskenoy to Grypherburg.
I met Mantra and found that voice when I came to this place. She and Raidian are remarkable women. Oh, no, I'm not here to ask for an autograph. But I do have a couple of microphones in my collection, just saying…
I used to read the proverb of the day on my college's student council radio. One day, I didn't have time to make preparations, so I read my own work. Word got out somehow, and an angry student came to demand that I read his work too. Yes, it was Rania.
Start recording. There's a lot of paperwork yet to be done, so the scheduled long-range communications test will have to be delayed—were you looking for me? Just making an audio diary. Mind if I continue? I hope I won't be interrupted again tomorrow. End recording.
I tried to call for help from the outside after being shut inside the quarantine zone, but heard only silence. The anxiety had me vomiting on a daily basis. But it turned out there was someone beside me listening all that time. Fedya—actually, how should I call him?
Tishinna Viktorovna Belyaeva is not the name Botani was born with, but it is the name that stayed with her the longest. The award displayed on the wall, the fading photo framed in gemstone, and the thick stack of penalty decisions all bear witness to important moments in Tishinna's life. For a long time, she thought she was lucky to be admitted to the Imperial College of Science and Engineering in Grypherburg under a generous scholarship from Grand Duchess Elisaveta, even receiving an invitation to the Grand Duchess's solemn manor. Where, to her bewilderment, she was made to stand by the fireplace for an hour, watching the Grand Duchess speak to her advisers without being granted an audience, or even a single glance. It felt very cold outside when she left that building. The Imperial College of Science and Engineering was also a far cry from what Tishinna had dreamed of. It was a garden of wealthy nobility, where the unruly children of aristocrats were sent to spend a few years, whereupon they became 'intellectuals'. There was no place there for a commoner from Bresk, and an Elafia at that. Indeed, there were hardly any non-Ursine students at the school. Tishinna often found herself locked out of her room at night, or having to search for her shoes and scarf early in the morning because they had mysteriously gone missing. She eventually took up residence in a storage room at the library, which was open 24/7. This earned her the nickname 'Botani'—derived from 'botanik', or 'bookworm'—but also a place of peace and quiet. At the library, she found a notebook belonging to one Ksenia Markovna Nelidova, which seemed to be a survival guide from a non-Ursine student. Times had changed, and many of the locations and people in the notebook were no longer relevant, but Tishinna found courage in it nonetheless. Books had always been better teachers to her: following the guidance of professional textbooks, she created the communications device she had long sought, even modifying her own antler to hear signals from afar. Then, everything changed one night. The cries from the Far North drowned her. She tried to tell others what she heard, but found that she had no voice, and thus no power to bring about change. Listening to the voices from the Far North, she felt the pain of snowflakes cutting her skin open, and finally realized why the Grand Duchess had summoned her that day only to ignore her. It was all so simple. It was the same reason she was admitted into this college for aristocrats: the Grand Duchess needed an example of her benevolence. All she needed from Tishinna was for her to be seen walking into the manor and spending an hour inside, so that the people would praise the kindness and benevolence of their Grand Duchess. What she thought had been the product of her hard work and good fortune was no more than a political show. Since that night, Tishinna's name began to frequent the school's penalty notices, while the nickname 'Botani' she had been mocked with began to spread amongst the students trying to speak out for the tragedy in the far north.

I remember you, Doctor. That unusual high-frequency waveform that appeared in Rhodes Island's encrypted signals. Just call me Botani, that's how everyone else calls me. It means 'bookworm', and I take it as a compliment.
I can't see the screen very well—whoa, there's even more static on it when I approach! Is it because of interference? Give me a minute to turn off my equipment. Well, more like a dozen minutes.
A commendation for me? Thank you. I once captured a Rhodes Island commendation message in an attic corner at my college. I never thought at the time that I would earn such a commendation myself.
I appreciate the recognition, even if I don't know if I actually deserve it. The same medal carries different weight on different people. There is much that I have to learn from Mantra and the others.
Operation channel connected. Beginning test.
Botani here. Beginning timecode check.
All units, maintain radio silence. We are leaving.
Target acquired.
Listening in.
Waiting for response.
Coordinates synced.
Botani ready.
Listen, hear the winds of the Far North behind us!
Look, see the torch in your hands!
Remember, know why we fight!
Shout, that they might hear our voice!
Radio silence lifted. We can cheer now, Doctor. It's a victory worth celebrating. Botani, over and out.
Good work, Doctor. Botani, over and out.
Botani, over and out.
Botani to all, Botani to all. Hear my voice, and I'll guide you to safety.
The soft humming of machines running… it's comforting.
Hey, did you hear something?
Don't touch that horn. No, it won't shock you, but it sends a terrible noise into my mind—ah, you believed me.
Arknights.
Somehow, New Year lights here feel warmer than in Grypherburg, and the wind gentler. Look, some operators are already dancing… would you like to try? I just picked up a new song that you might like.
How are you doing, Doctor? The report is on your desk. Would you like me to read it to you? Ahem. Today's news—
Put on my headphones, Doctor! Do you hear a strange beeping? Can you note it down for me? Thanks! Hm, it sounds like some kind of message. Seems like it translates to—aha! It says 'Happy Birthday!' The cake's still on its way, though.
With the call from the Far North that was heard all over Ursus, I realized that just listening was not enough. Change can only come by making more sound, and letting more people hear it. Even if we can only change a little bit at a time, Rhodes Island will be with us, yes?
Tishinna, my dear child, I hope this letter finds you well. Thank you for telling me your new address and providing recent updates, which has set my anxious heart at ease. There is nothing to worry about at home. The weather in Bresk is still the same, but at least I'm getting your letters, and flour and vegetables remain affordable. As for your suggestion of moving, I thought long and hard about it, but our address is the only information on us that your sister has. All I hope is for both my children to come home safe and sound... Will you forgive me, Tishinna? I've been in touch with this 'Rhodes Island' you mentioned. They're nice people, though they always wear a stern expression, and they put on these 'Third Bureau' uniforms to avoid suspicion. It must be hard work. They visit weekly, bringing food and fabric, and taking with them some old things you left behind. Last time they took the letters you sent back, saying they would have to be destroyed to ensure secrecy. I'm also not sure why you asked them to send the toys you brought from Sami to Rhodes Island... Maybe you still have memories of the place. By the way, they were asking me whether you've been in contact with your old friend. How was I to know? They even wrote down the name of the friend, like they were concerned I couldn't hear clearly. How kind of them! How did you meet this Fedya fellow anyway? How is he? Why haven't you told me about him before? Your mother (who is eager to know more about your story with your 'old friend')
Botani finally met Mantra and Raidian in Rhodes Island once things had settled down, even receiving a microphone autographed by Raidian. After learning that Team Mantra's members held open seminars on the effective use of long-range communications Arts, Botani could often be seen in Engineering's presentation room, hoping to sit in on one. I learned a lot from those seminars. It seemed like the attendees didn't know each other very well, sitting apart from each other. I don't have a very good memory for faces, so I didn't have the courage to greet unfamiliar colleagues either. In fact, I couldn't even tell who were supposed to be the lecturers and who were the students. Fortunately, that situation did not last for long. One day, the lecturers came to quiz me after I had just performed some repairs on my antenna. Their questions were quite difficult, and I saw the disappointment on their faces when I failed to answer one... After that, I began spending my nights studying in my room, trying to keep up with them. I suppose I did well enough, and I felt the benefit of this unique form of education. I learned a lot of new things. As far as surprises... I found there were far more lecturers than students at these seminars, and for some reason they all liked to question me. —Operator Botani I went to the Engineering Department's presentation room too. I thought the Team Mantra seminars were only a legend, but they turned out to be real! Botani didn't look like she liked to talk, so we only sat around, none of us daring to ask questions. Then one day, the antenna on her head quivered, and I realized it was a sign for us to ask questions, so I went up to her! Her Ursine accent left a deep impression on me. She spoke methodically at a careful pace, and whenever I asked a question lacking in rigor, she stopped to let me think for myself. I would have to go back to my room and think about it all night, then she would tell me the correct answer the following day. In a matter of weeks, the other new engineers and I felt we made significant progress in our technical and theoretical knowledge. We wrote a joint letter of appreciation to Mantra, thanking her for the help her team had given us. —An engineering operator So is that why no one came to the seminars?! Everyone went to the presentation room—I was waiting for them in the break room! Isn't it an Engineering tradition to discuss academic problems in the break room? Did I misunderstand something? Well, whatever, I'll just hide this letter before the captain finds out... She asked you to give it to me? She knew?! —Operator Elysium
Tishinna Viktorovna Belyaeva is the name Botani has used for the longest, but it is not the name she was born with. Her original name came from the frost and springs of Sami, given to her by her sister, which she claims is untranslatable into any other language. A shadow came over her eyes as she brought up her sister. Her sister was not like her at all, not even like their mother. One day, her sister took her to see the ice springs, only to leave her alone in the snow-covered woods. She called her sister's name in panic and dug a shallow hole in the ground, trying to hide herself in it... She does not recall how long she spent in the dark woods, for her memory stopped there. Much later, her sister told her by the fireside that she had been watching her from a short distance away. When asked why she didn't answer, her sister said she had not pronounced her name correctly. She looked into her sister's eyes and saw only disappointment. After that time in the forest, my sister gave me an intercom she made herself, and taught me how to tune it to a special channel, how to speak into it, and how to receive a response. I was too young to understand what she was doing. Our mother may have noticed, but she never told me. The day we moved away from Sami, my sister stopped walking and said, 'This is as far as I go.' She was speaking in Sami. She said she could go no further with my mother and me. I wanted to go with her, but she said no. She said I had an Ursine name, and that I could no longer go back with her. Mother said nothing. All she did was weep. I remember holding the intercom my sister gave me. I remembered that if I wanted to find her, all I needed to do was call her name on that channel, and she would appear and tell me which syllable I had mispronounced. So I turned on the intercom, but I didn't know what to say—I couldn't remember her Sami name. It was as though everything I knew about Sami was disappearing from my memory. In a panic, I cried the name in Ursine that would become mine for many years to come. My sister did not stop, and disappeared into the snow. Would she have stayed if I had called her name correctly, with the correct pronunciation? I don't know. I lost the intercom. Maybe Mother threw it away. I wanted to get another one. —Audio recording from a counseling session, used with Operator Botani's permission
Rhodes Island took in many survivors of the Katorga Incident, providing them psychological support. Botani was the most cooperative of those who eventually joined Rhodes Island, and the first to consent to the use of the Self-Diagnosis and Treatment of Trauma Using Exposure Therapy Recorder β, and to share her data with the Medical Department. Indeed, Medical found her nonchalance on the matter abnormal. [Audio Log] (Noise) ...? More EM interference... Did that recording save? The bad news is that I couldn't find the Save Recording button, and I'm not comfortable with disassembling the machine. The good news is that there's still 2% power left, and it should auto-save before turning off... right? I should keep talking. I've told you how I became trapped in the lockdown zone and how I got out with Sonya and the others. What else can I tell you? Do I really need to tell you how I hid in a wardrobe for three days and how I cried for help in a voice so low that only I could hear it? Or... should I talk about... how I took a life... (Heavy breathing) No... no. I... I didn't do it on purpose. At least, not the first time. He was... swinging a knife, like he didn't feel pain. I just... I just wanted to live. I didn't want to keep hiding in that wardrobe. There were bloody scratch marks on the back panel... someone had died there before I hid in it. No one could hear me. Nothing I did meant anything. Katorga was... a coffin for the living. (Vomiting sounds) ...I'm sorry. How do I delete this recording? People are dying... why am I talking to myself here? No, this is not how it should be— (Recording interrupted) Botani submitted this audio, admitting that she had accidentally destroyed the SDTTETR β in an outburst, and was only able to extract a partial recording from the storage media. She also submitted a broken dagger, which she said she took from the wardrobe. She does not know who it belonged to, whether it was used in self-defense, and certainly not what happened to its previous owner. She had taken the broken blade out of a vague sense of responsibility. She survived, yet she dared not look back. In her own words, looking back was 'like sleeping wrong: it makes it really hurt to turn around. But it'll stop hurting eventually—it's just a matter of time. Now that the time has come, I feel like I can finally let it go... but I don't know who to give it to. Will you take it? By the way, I'd like to ask about the intellectual property rights for the SDTTETR β. While my attempts to repair it failed, I did manage to create small audio recorders imitating its core structure. Do I need to pay royalties to Closure? I'll only use them to make personal journals, since I found that I seem to respond well to this sort of self-conversation therapy. At least I'm making my voice heard to myself. —Operator Botani
