Ferne Barn, born in Columbia, owner of an independent travel agency that claims there is no place they won't go. She is also the sole employee of said agency other than the late Martin Barn, honorary director. As she receives treatment at Rhodes Island, she also reached an agreement with us to perform guide functions on field missions under the code name 'Cairn'.

You're not seriously expecting me to give you a tour of your own office! C'mon, I'm getting you out of this place! I'll cart you out, if I have to!
It's more than just cannibals banished from Rusthammer over there, we got Catastrophe cultists infesting the place, all in the name of the living Originium forest… Guh, most of my clients would be asking me to take them there by this point. Where's your sense of curiosity?! You wait here, I'll get us some water before I tell you more!
Eh, no biggie even if you didn't bail me out, that prison wasn't so bad. I accidentally ruined the reputations of enough travel agencies, I had plenty of companies trying to get me thrown in jail, but thanks to them, my Terran Travels 'Free Lodgings' Guidebook has a few new entries.
Doesn't matter how much money you've got or how hard the job is, I'm not gonna charge you an arm and a leg if you're feeling something like the Bleached Wasteland. If your idea's good enough, the only consideration I'll need is you bringing yourself along, buuut if you just wanna go into the restricted areas to snap pics with the warning signs, then that'll cost ya!
Look, I might be a rulebreaker, but even I've got standards! Standards like, 'make sure the client comes out without a scratch'! If I didn't keep to that sort of ironclad rule, I'd never have thought to fight off a whole manglerbeast by myself, haha…
It doesn't have to be a restricted area, y'know. It's not like I'm into getting shocked by electric fences. If you believe an ancient secret passage is hidden in Rhodes Island's toilets, then I'd be happy to take you there. However many skeptics there are on this land is the number of places worth going.
What? My tie's all wrinkly? Oh, that's because I used it to wipe too many of my clients' tears. Sad tears, emotional tears, happy tears… Travel has this mysterious effect on people. So, when am I gonna make you cry?
'Traces of civilization among the stars', 'fleets wandering through subspace', huh… It's not that I don't believe you, I just don't understand any of it! Even if you were some crusty old man on a sickbed, delirious with fever instead of the Doctor, I'd believe you. The real question is, when are we gonna get to see them?
Atatatatata—enough outta you! Everybody knows Oripathy's incurable, but should someone working all day and all night to cure it really be saying that? I've still got lots of 'you can't go there' places I want to check out, so I'll leave the 'you can't cure that' diseases to you.
[Industry Commentary: Braving the Forbidden—Reform or Rehash?] There seems to be little point in talking about 'forbidden' areas in a land that is 90% uninhabited. On this land tilled by Catastrophe for thousands of years, even wilderness level enough for nomadic cities to traverse is rare, much less fertile soil suited for farming. For city-dwellers who think fowlbeast meat is grown in supermarkets directly in their packages, ready to be cooked, the nomadic cities and the wilderness visible from their routes are the entirety of Terra. They do not think of other places as 'distant' or 'dangerous', because they do not think of those places at all. As such, 'travel' in the traditional sense is more like a vacation. Caravan International Travel Agency can take you to Sami, but all you will see is a well-furnished Sami-style resort village. It will feel no different from a Columbian nomadic city, at least once you spend a few days acclimating to the cold. In recent years, however, Columbian tourism has become fascinated with the forbidden. News reports of the wealthy hiring guides to take them into forbidden areas are a regular occurrence, and travel agencies have started marketing these 'forbidden tours'. Naturally, the authorities responded by stepping up their control of such areas. Last year, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Arts Units, and Originium, the Columbian Park Police, and the army's Mobile Cavalry came to an accord regarding management division of the Bleached Wasteland, drafting a patrol route that fully covers the region. As for the reason... 'It's true that enforcement has gotten stricter, but that has nothing to do with those so-called 'forbidden tours'. Two tour guides dressed up in military uniforms pretend to check your papers, then you take a few photos in a place that looks empty enough—that's all that 'forbidden tour' crap is about. 'If you want to see caverns with naturally occurring liquefied Originium, or Feranmut carcasses lying in the desert—the stuff you'd have to risk your hide to see... 'Then look for Ferne Barn. 'Me? Forget it, I'm not taking anyone with me, no way. 'Ferne's the only one with the skills AND the willingness to bring people along. You wanna go, find her.' —Operator Asbestos, when asked about 'forbidden tours'
Rusthammer 'Fiends Gang' camp, forty-three kilometers east of Lake Sulligan. Two people were tied up and hung upside-down from an arch made of bones. 'Are you REALLY sure about this, Ferne? This ain't a movie where the cavalry come riding to the rescue in the nick of time! You saw that blind devil yourself! He could break my neck with his fingers! Are you SURE you made the arrangements? Are you REALLY sure those people are coming? Say something already! We're gonna die!' 'Hm... I never realized that this is how the land looks upside-down.' '?' 'Say, don't those houses look like boats when they're upside down?' 'We've only got a few more minutes left to live, and this is what you wanna talk about?' 'It's precisely because we've only got a few more minutes that I wanna take a good long look.' Two minutes later, an armored ambulance with the words 'Mandrake International Wilderness Rescue' charged through the west-side fence, and the crew pointed three ballistae at the executioner who was polishing his blade. Meanwhile, on the east side of the camp, a man wearing a metal bucket on his head leisurely got off his burdenbeast and waved at the crew of the ambulance, gesturing that there was still room for negotiation. 'You know, upside-down trees look kinda like toilet brushes.'

Allow me to introduce you to our travel agency! I'm the president, and you're the staff. So, where are we off to?
Do we really have to watch recordings of places we've been the whole way through?
Pfft! Since when did tour guides get promotions? It's like a musbeast getting a 'Best Street Cleaner' award.
The gold-star tour guide—exclusively recognized by the mysterious pharma corp which deals with politicians all across Terra! Who knows how many clients I'll draw with a reputation like that!
I've never brought a group this big before.
Hey, stick close to my guide flag, okay? No wandering off, or you'll get lost.
Hey, you don't need to stick that close! I climbed up this tree to scout the place, okay?!
Whew, something stinks! Means I know where the enemy is!
Hey, listen! I got something to say!
I'm here, I'm here! Explanation time!
Doctor, get up here! The view's amazing!
Can't let them pass? I'm used to that sorta thing!
'Please note: breaking into restricted areas will not give you superpowers!'
'Ammo is expensive, so there will be no warning shots!'
'Warning: continuing onwards may lead to missile barrage!'
Y'know, these noisy loudspeakers are pretty handy for scaring people.
Told you, not a single hair harmed. Can't really call this place a 'death zone' anymore now, can you?
Alright, group dismissed! Make sure to tell your friends all about me when you get home!
These guys are way too pro at escaping! I should sue them for infringing on my patented techniques!
Look, it's no big deal, let's just run first!
There don't happen to be any secret areas you're not allowed into here, are there?
Gee, you poke like a needlefly, Doctor!
If you want a group huddle, how about a trip to Sami with me?
Arknights.
Pfft, okay, enough jumping around, Doctor. There aren't actually any Sargonian tribes who gather around Originium clusters doing headstand dances to greet the new year, I was just teasing you. But to make sure your jumping doesn't go to waste, my New Year's resolution is to bring you somewhere that actually has a custom like that!
So, figured out where you wanna go, Doctor?
Happy happy birthday to you! Can you guess what's so special about today? It's the day you graduate from working in a teeny-tiny space to traipsing across all of Terra! I can't believe that after all these years, you're still pacing around the same little office! Today, you're coming with me! Outside! On a trip!
Oooh… It's good that everyone has dreams like this, means the two of us won't be running out of work to do any time soon. You're in charge of making the dreams people have come true, while I'm in charge of the same, but for the dreams people are too scared to have. We're like the two bits of bread in a sandwich!
Ferne Barn, citizen of Columbia. Investigation reveals that she has registered more than twenty accounts with seven banks in fifteen different Columbian nomadic cities, using different identities. After tracking the cashflow of these accounts, we found Ferne's spending patterns to be extremely suspicious. Virtually all expenses are for medical bills, medicine, luxury items, antiques, as well as fines and bails paid to law enforcement authorities. There are no signs of spending on any ordinary items, be it food, clothing, housing, or any basic daily necessities. Therefore, we believe that this 'Ferne Barn' does not actually exist: she is simply a persona created by criminal organizations to facilitate their illicit activities... —Internal Revenue Department Investigative Report When I first saw the operator who was to serve as my guide on the mission, she was crawling on top of her dorm room's closet. She tossed me a package before I asked. 'Here! Your onboarding equipment!' She said. It was a bunch of junk. Broken telephone wires, tattered tarp pieces, safety ropes that had lost their buckles—and looked like they might have already taken a few lives—and plastic ties that looked straight out of a scrap heap. 'What's the matter? I gave you the best stuff!' She looked downright proud. I pointed at the tattered tarp, then at myself, and shot her a doubtful look. '...Ah! I forgot to give you scissors! One moment.' Suddenly, I understood. She was wearing the same equipment she gave me: a telephone wire as a hair tie, a piece of tarp as her skirt, a safety rope as her belt, and used plastic ties to fasten her protective gear and communicator. This junk was her agency's 'equipment'. As I took out my wallet, I saw her smile disappear. 'Please put that away. This agency does not require its employees to foot the bill.' But she didn't even have the money for proper equipment! 'It's called smart spending! You gotta build connections with doctors and medicine dealers in case a customer gets sick or gets hurt, and you wanna be in the good graces of the ATAO, Rangers, and Mobile Cavalry officials so they don't arrest or 'accidentally' shoot your clients! That's where the money goes. As for equipment... what's the problem? Is the hair tie inconvenient? Is the belt not solid enough?' —Rhodes Island Field Operator Report
After a long and drawn-out process, the Trimounts City Administration finally announced that they were closing the investigation into the recent incidents. With reluctance written all over his face, a city spokesman admitted that the 'savage' (who was smashing walnuts with a briefcase as the spokesman emphasized the word), two meters tall and with indecipherable symbols painted all over his face with solidified Originium crystal, and who answered any questions with manglerbeast-like growling, was indeed a senior accountant of United Donuts Group whose papers were all in order. The Administration had to admit another failure in just two weeks: they failed in stopping this 'senior accountant' from riding into the wilderness atop of a box truck containing one thousand two hundred hard-shelled briefcases. Fifty kilometers north of the end of the Trimounts route, in a forest that exists in a strange state of symbiosis with active Originium, the lives of one thousand two hundred natives unknown to Columbia were about to change dramatically. With these one thousand two hundred hard-shelled briefcases, they would be able to easily crack open the mutated Originium slugs indigenous to the area, which were their main source of nutrition. The one who brought such a wonderful tool back to the tribe would become a hero. He would be able to have the first pick of the freshest Originium slugs, and his tribe would build a statue of him with solidified Originium crystal. The man himself, however, seemed to have different ideas. Soon, the two meter-tall 'senior accountant' was once again spotted on the streets of Trimounts. Quickly encircled by a swarm of excited reporters and the sulking city spokesman who kept cursing at the sight of this grand comeback, the man took out, with a proud look on his face, two calculators and began to play an unfathomable beat on the buttons. Apparently, he enjoyed creating chaos in this unfamiliar city far more than accepting his tribesmen's tribute of Originium slugflesh. City Administration officials submitted multiple requests to authorize a warrant, but all of those reports to their normally swift and decisive superior went unanswered. After one week, they finally lost patience and kicked down the door to their boss's office, only to find it empty. Seventy kilometers east of the end of the Trimouts route, in a Durin-occupied ruin deep under a metal megastructure, their boss was muttering drunkenly with a cup of strong mushroom wine in his hand. Few know that a guide by the name of Ferne Barn was behind all this, from the flawless paperwork of the 'senior accountant', to the silent disappearance of a City Administration official. For her part, Ferne seemed uninterested in this farce of her own making. Was it a prank, a social experiment, a marketing ploy, or a show? Ferne never said a thing, even when speculation was at its peak. The reporters might be fascinated by the presence of a savage on the streets of the city of progress, and the officials might be devastated that their superior had been reduced to a drunkard living in ruins with the Durin, but Ferne simply found it utterly natural that anyone might want to be anywhere and lead any kind of life. 'Is it strange for me to think that way? ...I guess it might be. But the job of a guide is to fulfill those dreams, isn't it?'
Our living room was always filled with children listening to Dad's stories when I came back from school. None of the children came to Dad's funeral, but there was an uninvited guest who interrupted the ritual with blaring sirens. A potbellied cop poked his head out of the patrol car, saying he had received complaints from parents about someone by the name of Martin Barn, who deceived children with tales of gold-scaled sandbeasts and the like— The cop stopped mid-sentence, took a look at us, then at the name on the coffin, and left without another word. Sheriff Jones of Trenton—I nailed the name to the wall when I founded the travel agency, hoping to prove to him one day that Dad wasn't a scammer, and gold-scaled sandbeasts were real. In the last few years, I proved a lot of things to a lot of people. Some didn't believe there were nomadic cities outside of Columbia, some believed the Pioneers' treasure was hidden in the Bleached Wasteland... I let them see the truth with their own eyes, but was never able to prove the existence of gold-scaled sandbeasts. I had theories. The steppe-dwelling sandbeasts usually have multiple layers of backfins in order to blend into their surroundings, which could easily be mistaken for scales at a distance. Maybe sandbeasts that dwell in golden steppes rich in Originium really do look like they have golden scales. Another theory was that the people of Rim Billiton had tamed small sandbeasts for use in the mines—the capillaries in their backfins can help with determining air conditions in the tunnels, and people sometimes would paste golden foil on their backfins for easier identification. Was that what Dad saw? It makes sense, doesn't it? But there's no proof. It helps people understand how these stories could come about, but it doesn't stop them from thinking Dad was lying. Besides, Sheriff Jones passed away two years ago. —Ferne Barn, on a rare occasion when she spoke about her father Sandbeasts are small, fluffy animals, while gold-scaled sandbeasts exist only as drawings in picture books, or as curiosities in tabloid columns. And for many years, Martin Barn was the sole supplier of such columns for the Columbian tabloid industry. Columbian archives consider such tabloids to be beneath them, and Ferne never saw those columns again after Martin passed away. That is, until she came to Rhodes Island. The column on the page was accompanied by a shoddy illustration of a gold-scaled sandbeast, which looked like someone had copied and pasted the texture of a pineapple. The newspaper had become creased with age, but someone had carefully flattened the creases before pasting the cutting in a notebook. The Cautus with bangs like a pinwheel cookie gazed intently into Ferne's eyes. 'You want me to help you find this creature?' The Cautus nodded fervently. 'You believe it exists?' The Cautus cocked her head in confusion. She said she did not know whether she believed in it or not. It wasn't a question she had even thought about. She had simply heard a story and wanted to see it for herself. The Cautus asked if whether she believed in it or not was important. Should she? 'No, it's not important. Let's go find it!'
