The United Territories of Kazimierz, a country of knights and commerce in north-central Terra, is a longstanding military power and the most economically open and financially developed nation on the continent. It has fought wars with Ursus, Victoria, and Leithanien.
Long ago, the Pegasi formed the "Knightclub" and conquered the plains of Kazimierz for themselves and their Kuranta kin, granting fiefs to knights. When the Knightclub grew bloated, the Pegasi split it into smaller clubs, defined the rights of knights, affinities, and commoners, and allowed other races to become knights. To preserve rule, they declared the Pegasus Kingdom with a claim to the throne by divine right.
The Nightzmora, Kuranta Elders from afar, arrived and defeated the Pegasus Kingdom in battle, the Khagan's Kheshig crushing the knights. The royal family's failed peace negotiations enraged the populace; Knightclubs resisted the Nightzmora independently until the Khagan moved on. Knights, affinities, and commoners then drove the Pegasi from power, ending the monarchy. Kazimierz was reorganized into a union of knightly territories with a joint council, the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz, plus the Knights Association and National Council. The Affinities, an organization serving the knights, gradually took control of the economy and became the Kazimierz General Chamber of Commerce (K.G.C.C.), which now rivals the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi and is viewed as a shadow government.
The "Campaign Knight Act" reorganized the military into Adeptus Sprawiedliwi–controlled Campaign Knightclubs and disbanded noble private armies. Competition Knights—professional athletes in knight competitions—now dominate the public image of knighthood, managed by commercial Competition Knightclubs. Knightly families, led by Knights Primus, are formally equal, with military ranks replacing noble hierarchy. After the 10th Ursus-Kazimierz War ended in 1062, registered competition knights increased sharply.
Modern Kazimierz runs on massive capital flows; the K.G.C.C. controls industries through contracting companies, and nearly everything becomes a commodity. The populace embraces knight competitions, which bring wealth, prestige, and tourism; the Kazimierz Major is the highest echelon of competition. The country remains internally divided yet keeps growing, in what the text calls an endless marathon.
The United Territories of Kazimierz is a country of knights and commerce, boasting a rich martial heritage and standing as a longstanding military power. It is also the most economically open and financially developed country in Terra. Located in the north-central region, it has fought multiple wars with Ursus, Victoria, and Leithanien.
When powerful clans were establishing nations, the proud Pegasi refused to be ruled. They formed a military group called the "Knightclub" to carve out territory for themselves and their Kuranta kin. The plains named "Kazimierz" were then the center of a struggle between factions; the Pegasi intervened, sparked a great war, and vanquished all their foes. They built fortresses and villages, granting them as fiefs to knights—the first Kazimierz, territories united under the Pegasus Knightclub.
As external threats grew, the Knightclub expanded until it became bloated and nearly dysfunctional. The Pegasi split it into smaller, reorganized clubs, defined the rights and obligations of knights, affinities, and commoners, and permitted other races to become knights. Having lost their monopoly on knighthood, the Pegasi declared the Pegasus Kingdom and the divine right of their race to the throne.
The kingdom was in constant friction with the Hippogryph Kingdom to the East until the Hippogryph nobles at the border vanished. Investigating knights found another group of Kuranta Elders from afar—the Nightzmora. A fierce battle erupted on the plains. According to legend, the Pegasi charged into an illusory trap, found themselves surrounded, and the Khagan personally led the Kheshig to crush their final resistance.
The royal family attempted to negotiate peace, which failed—the Khagan had no interest in negotiations from a defeated enemy. Residents were enraged by this weakness, felt the Pegasi no longer qualified to rule, and the Knightclubs refused royal commands, resisting the Nightzmora until the Khagan moved on. In the interim, the regions formed a de facto autonomous state under the knights. When focus turned inward, angry knights, affinities, and commoners drove the Pegasi from power, ending the monarchy.
The knights then agreed to reorganize the kingdom into a union of territories governed by knightly nobles, coordinated by a joint council, the "Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz". They also established the Knights Association for knightly affairs and the National Council as a legislative body. Even so, noble knights began conflicting over clashing interests, disputes that continue today.
The affinities, seeking to better serve the united knight orders, established an organization modeled on the Knightclub. After the overthrow, the aristocratic military knights delegated public welfare and economics to the Affinities, who gradually seized control of the entire economy—an area the knights overlooked. The Affinities' mercantilist philosophy transformed Kazimierz into a powerful commercial nation. They regrouped as the Kazimierz General Chamber of Commerce (K.G.C.C.), acquired capital and enterprises, took control of the nomadic cities, and began challenging the knights' supremacy.
Folklore also tells of the Armorless Union: a knight infamous for harshness demanded crop taxes during a great disaster, and an enormous Darksteel arrow—more like a spear—shattered his armor and pinned him to the ground. Rumors spread of a hero with a Darksteel greatbow protecting the poor, with like-minded followers called the "Armorless Union" for opposing armored knight nobles. Conspiracy theories about them persist today.
After the dual knight-merchant structure was established, the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi and the Chamber cooperated on some matters while projecting influence into each other's spheres to gain total control.
Kazimierz lies southwest of Ursus, north of Victoria, and northwest of Leithanien. It is mainly hilly terrain and flat plains—the vast plains ringed by rolling hills form the quintessential Kazimierz image—with ample forest land. It has a temperate semi-arid grassland climate: cold winters, hot summers, minimal rainfall.
Centuries ago Kazimierz transitioned from monarchy to aristocratic republic. The feudal system remains its foundation: a federation of noble knights' territories. The Adeptus Sprawiedliwi originally managed these territories; after the Chamber's establishment, it refined its power structure and evolved into a military government led by knight commanders. It is a legislative and executive committee, composed mainly of knights, that forms the government; the "Grand Knight" is its chief executive and head of state. Most members hold dual knight-official roles.
The Knights Association handles knight-related affairs and titles. It has existed since modern Kazimierz's founding and stayed relatively independent, though its focus has largely shifted to "Competition Knights". The National Council is the legislative and judicial body; it has ceded part of its legislative authority to the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi, and the National Police is nominally under its jurisdiction. The K.G.C.C., theoretically a civilian economic organization, has become crucial to politics: it controls most economic activities and public affairs affecting citizens, and many basic services are outsourced to its companies. It is often viewed as a shadow government equal to the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi, though its ambitions extend further.
Kazimierz is divided into territories owned by noble knight families; some nomadic cities belong to territories, others are territories themselves. Most of the population lives in the nomadic cities, while fixed settlements are mostly small towns and villages outside city influence.
The countryside retains its old appearance, with farmers vigilant against Catastrophes. Tax collectors are now agency employees rather than knights; Chamber merchants buy up crops with cash, and salesmen sell industrial products, taking the cash away. During the wheat harvest, farmers exchange a year's harvest for a thin stack of banknotes, quickly spent on cheap industrial products—trapping the laborers on their own land.
Noble Knights are the traditional knights who own territories; they once led Knightclubs, fought in wars, and engaged in peacetime politics. Now barred from private armies and strictly overseen by the Knights Association, they invest in businesses and cultivate connections to preserve their status. Decades ago, the "Campaign Knight Act" reorganized the military into "Campaign Knights" under full Adeptus Sprawiedliwi control, banned noble private armies, disbanded noble Knightclubs, and suspended the noble privileges of nobles who joined. The military became dozens of Campaign Knightclubs, a professional conscription-based army employed by the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi, deployed for difficult tasks and siding with it against the Chamber.
Today "knight" most often means Competition Knights—professional athletes in knight competitions. The title of knight is both a noble symbol and certification of competition eligibility. Competition Knightclubs are commercial outfits that recruit and train knights, manage their image, and handle competitions. Only their members and knightly family representatives may enter most competitions. Large clubs are funded by mega-corporations and financial consortia; smaller squads must be self-sufficient.
Knightly families are noble families certified by the Knights Association, mostly ancient houses led by "Knights Primus" who register with the Association. Knights Primus who become Campaign Knights keep the title. The government now actively reclaims noble titles, and the Association dissolves families citing "no Knight Primus" or unaffordable costs. There is no hierarchy among noble families—all are equal, a design rooted in using military ranks to minimize noble status's impact on battlefield command. Members of knightly families can compete but claim no extra substantive privileges. Old rumors say knights took their wealth to the afterlife; Catastrophes have made their tombs hard to find, but treasure hunters still search.
Kazimierz is called the "A Country of Knights and Commerce", but today it is sustained by robust commerce and finance. The earliest modern economic theories began in Victoria, where scholars collected data proposing theories linking economics and society. Kazimierzian merchants invested in research institutes and brought in Victorian scholars; Kazimierzian enterprises applied the theories as rigid guidelines without collecting extensive data, yet achieved remarkable results. Scholars refined and promoted the theories, and modern "finance" was born and spread throughout Kazimierz. Capital circulates ceaselessly; people convert assets into financial instruments, everything gains a price tag, and everything dissolves into the ocean called "consumption".
The K.G.C.C. controls nearly every industry tied to social life—healthcare, education, transportation, agriculture—through contracting companies. Their competition is fierce, with entities resorting to underhanded tactics toward monopoly. In one quarter, the Grand Knight Territory's power supply company changed three times, each using the same equipment and personnel. "Acquire, then be acquired," an old proverb about lords, now reflects corporate battles.
Despite instability and the hostile government-Chamber relationship, residents remain optimistic: as one put it, as long as there are more Markis to grab and pocket, folks have nothing to worry about.
Though the nation no longer relies on knights, Kazimierz remains inseparable from them. People see knights' evolution from war machines to arena gladiators as social progress, and warmly embrace competitions. Traditional family members and Campaign Knight spokespersons criticize competitions as misaligned with knighthood's spirit and ineffective for defense, but remain a minority against the Chamber's propaganda. In 1062, media announced the 10th Ursus-Kazimierz war ended successfully with many aims achieved; criticism then sharply decreased, though outsiders note this view overlooks the Campaign Knights' role. Economically, competitions boost spending, bring wealth, prestige, and tourists, and benefit from nomadic cities' routes. The Kazimierz Major is the highest echelon of competition and the most anticipated match of the year. After the war, registered competition knights rose significantly, and the sport is now widely known throughout Terra.
Kazimierz remains inscrutable—traditions hollowed out and filled with the malice of "innovation", banners tainted with intrigue, internally divided yet growing stronger, its people running an endless marathon, hoping to outpace competitors before everything behind them collapses.
EPIGRAPH
The grasslands here have always been like this. Neither the earth-shaking cries of Ursus, nor the thunderous advance of the Khagan's boots and hooves, nor the shattering lances and clashing armor of knights have ever changed this vast expanse. The wind still sweeps across the land, the lush grass falling and rising again, echoing scenes from ages past. But in the callous city's neon lights, the terrifying Nightzmora, the legions of Ursus, and the relentless Knightclubs seem to have faded away forever, while the tattered war banners and glory have turned to ashes.
-A Few Winters
The United Territories of Kazimierz, abbreviated "Kazimierz", is a country of knights and commerce. Kazimierz boasts a rich martial heritage and is a longstanding military power. Kazimierz is also the most economically open and financially developed country in all of Terra. Located in the north-central region of Terra, Kazimierz has had multiple armed conflicts and wars with neighboring countries Ursus, Victoria, and Leithanien.
During an era when powerful clans across the land were establishing nations, the proud Pegasi refused to be ruled. They decided to form a military group called "Knightclub" to carve out territory through conquest for themselves and their Kuranta kin. At that time, the plains named "Kazimierz" were the center of a struggle between various factions. The Pegasi intervened in the conflict, sparking a great war. Amazingly, this reckless military adventure succeeded, and the Pegasi vanquished all of their foes. Afterward, the Pegasi built fortresses and villages on the plains and granted them as fiefs to the knights. This was the first Kazimierz, a set of territories united under the Pegasus Knightclub.
As the Pegasi consolidated their power, external threats grew, forcing them to continually expand the Knightclub. Eventually, the Knightclub became too bloated and overstaffed, leading to numerous internal problems that rendered it nearly dysfunctional. To rectify the situation, the Pegasi split the Knightclub into a series of smaller clubs which they then reorganized. For the first time, the Pegasi clearly defined the rights and obligations of knights, affinities, and commoners. To enhance their overall military strength, the Pegasi permitted other races to become knights as well. Having lost their monopoly on knighthood, the Pegasi decided to ensure their ruling status in another way. They declared the establishment of the Pegasus Kingdom, and with it, the divine right of the Pegasi race to sit on the throne.
The second edition of Kazimierz Marki adopted a drastically different design than the first, a design that remains striking even today. That was when Kazimierz took a huge leap into the future.
Since its establishment, the Pegasus Kingdom had been in constant friction with the Hippogryph Kingdom to the East, with conflicts gradually escalating between the two sides. However, one day, the Hippogryph nobles stationed at the border suddenly vanished without a trace. Suspicious knights went to investigate. To their surprise, they encountered not the Hippogryphs, nor the Ursus, but another group of Kuranta Elders who had journeyed from afar—the Nightzmora. The Pegasi, who had once conquered Kazimierz, now faced another Kuranta tribe who had come for conquest.
Soon after, a fierce battle erupted between the Pegasi and the Nightzmora on the plains of Kazimierz. According to legend, the Pegasi led their knights in a charge against the Nightzmora Army's lines, only to fall into the illusory trap created by the Nightzmora. When they came to their senses, they found themselves completely surrounded. In the end, the Khagan personally led the Kheshig forces to crush the knights' final resistance. The Pegasus Kingdom lay utterly defeated at the hands of the Nightzmora.
This sent shockwaves through the Pegasus royal family. The proud Pegasi, who had established their nation through legendary success on the battlefield, now saw the
tables reversed. To maintain their ruling status and avoid further losses, the royal family attempted to negotiate peace with the Nightzmora Khagan. This attempt, predictably, failed. The Khagan had no interest in accepting political negotiations from a defeated enemy; his focus remained on his path of conquest. When the residents of Kazimierz learned of the royal family's unilateral peace negotiations, they were utterly enraged. They could not tolerate such weakness from the royal family. They felt that the Pegasi were no longer qualified to rule. The various Knightclubs refused to obey the royal family's commands, organizing themselves in different regions to resist the Nightzmora Army until the Khagan led his entire force to their next destination.
In the time between the defeat of the Pegasi royal family and the Nightzmora Army's departure, the various regions of Kazimierz had already formed a de facto autonomous state under the knights' leadership. When focus shifted from external threats to internal affairs, a fierce upheaval occurred almost immediately: angry knights, affinities, and commoners gathered to hold the royal family accountable. Together, they drove the Pegasi from power. With that, the Kazimierzian monarchy came to an end. As the knights of Kazimierz sat around the long table in the palace council chamber, they realized that simply declaring victory over the royal family was not enough—this land needed a new order. After protracted debates, arguments, and mutual threats, the knights finally reached a consensus. The Kazimierzian Kingdom would be reorganized into a union of territories governed by knightly nobles, and the noble knights of Kazimierz would establish a joint council called the "Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz" to coordinate its affairs. Subsequently, they established the Knights Association, dedicated to coordinating knightly affairs, and the National Council, which served as a legislative body, one after another, completing the basic framework of Kazimierz's political system. However, even before the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz was fully established, the noble knights ruling different territories began to engage in both open and covert conflicts due to clashing interests. These disputes have never ceased, continuing even to this day.
The affinities sought a better way to serve the united knight orders in their battle against the Nightzmora. Thus, they established an organization called the "Affinity", modeled after the Knightclub' own organizational structure. After the Pegasi royal family was overthrown, aristocratic military knights rose as the new ruling class. They delegated public welfare and economic responsibilities to the Affinities. Over time, the Affinities gradually seized control of the entire Kazimierz economy—an area the knights largely overlooked. Time moved forward, and with it, history. By the time the knights emerged from their endless internal conflicts, Kazimierz had changed beyond recognition. The Affinities' mercantilist ruling philosophy proved highly effective, transforming Kazimierz into a powerful commercial nation that was able to bring in a vast array of new technology. The knights no longer had enough power to rule Kazimierz on their own. The Affinities regrouped into a new economic organization known as the Kazimierz General Chamber of Commerce (K.G.C.C.). They actively sought external assistance and acquired capital and enterprises. With these resources, they took control of the nomadic cities and began to challenge the knights' supremacy.
The Armorless Union is a group that exists in Kazimierzian folklore. According to legend, there was once a knight infamous for his harshness towards his subjects. During a year of great disaster, this knight still demanded the usual crop taxes from the people. One day, as he set out to collect taxes, an arrow suddenly pierced the sky, coming from out of nowhere. The fearsome arrow shattered the knight's armor, pierced through his body, and pinned him to the ground, leaving him immobilized. Only then did onlookers realize that the arrow was enormous and made of Darksteel. In truth, it was more like a spear than an arrow. After several similar incidents, rumors spread of a legendary hero wielding a Darksteel greatbow, covertly protecting the poor from the greedy knights. They said that this hero was not acting alone, and many like-minded individuals had gathered under his banner. They were called the "Armorless Union" because they did not wear armor and were dedicated to opposing the armored knight nobles. This legend's influence is so strong that, even today, conspiracy theories about the Armorless Union's existence persist among the people of Kazimierz, with numerous versions of the tale.
An Colossal Darksteel Arrow used in Kazimierz films.
The Armorless Union remains a popular subject in Kazimierzian film. Sometimes they are portrayed as villains, sometimes as heroes. Occasionally, they team up with knights to battle other monsters.
After the dual knight-merchant ruling structure was established in Kazimierz, the relationship between the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi and the General Chamber of Commerce became extraordinarily delicate. Both sides attempted to cooperate on certain matters while simultaneously projecting their influence into each other's spheres of power in an attempt to gain total control of Kazimierz.
Kazimierz is bordered by three countries: she lies to the southwest of Ursus, to the north of Victoria, and to the northwest of Leithanien. Kazimierz is mainly composed of hilly terrain and flat plains. The vast plains, bordered on all sides by gently rolling hills, form the quintessential image of the Kazimierz landscape in the minds of the Terran people. Additionally, the region has ample forest land.
Kazimierz has a temperate semi-arid grassland climate, with cold winters, hot summers, and minimal rainfall.
■ The vast plains of Kazimierz are ideal for growing crops, especially wheat and potatoes. It's no surprise that potato pancakes are the most common food in the Kazimierzian countryside.
Centuries ago, Kazimierz transitioned from a monarchy to an aristocratic republic. The feudal system is the foundation of Kazimierz—the country is essentially a federation of noble knights' territories. The original role of the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi was to manage and coordinate these territories uniformly. After the General Chamber of Commerce was established, the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi began refining its power structure to solidify its authority. Over time, it evolved into a military government led by knight commanders.
The Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz is a legislative and executive committee, composed mainly of knights, responsible for forming the government and ruling the country. The "Grand Knight" serves as the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi's chief executive, as well as Kazimierz's head of state. The vast majority of Adeptus Sprawiedliwi members hold dual roles as knights and government officials, reflecting Kazimierz's deep-rooted military traditions.
The Kazimierz Knights Association is the institution dedicated to handling
knight-related affairs and managing knightly titles. The Knights Association has a long history. It has existed since modern Kazimierz was first founded. Although its name has changed over time, it has remained relatively independent since its establishment. However, today, the Knights Association's primary focus has largely shifted to "Competition Knights".
The National Council is Kazimierz's legislative and judicial body. As the most recently established major state institution, the National Council has, in practice, ceded part of its legislative authority to the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi. The nation's chief law enforcement agency, the Kazimierz National Police, is nominally under the jurisdiction of the National Council.
In theory, the General Chamber of Commerce, as a civilian economic organization, should not wield the immense influence it currently possesses. However, the reality is that the K.G.C.C. has become a crucial part of Kazimierz's political landscape. The majority of economic activities and public affairs that impact citizens' lives are controlled by the Chamber. Many basic services and functions within key industries are outsourced by the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi to private companies under the Chamber's umbrella. The K.G.C.C. is often viewed as the Kazimierz shadow government, standing on equal footing with the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi. Yet, it is well known that their ambitions extend far beyond this.
■ The reception hall of the General Chamber of Commerce's headquarters is gleaming— the floors, the walls, even the ceiling shine. As one steps into the hall, they see countless shadows, each one mirroring their exact movements.
Kazimierz is divided into territories. Each territory is owned by a noble knight family. Some nomadic cities are parts of a territory, while others are territories in and of themselves. Most of Kazimierz's population is concentrated within these nomadic cities. The fixed settlements within Kazimierz are primarily small to medium-sized towns and villages, most of which lie outside the influence of the cities.
The term "knight" holds a much deeper meaning in Kazimierz than anywhere else, as the very fabric of its society is woven from a deep-rooted knightly tradition. Over time, for various reasons, the knightly class has evolved and divided into different groups.
Unlike the bustling scenes of the nomadic cities, most of Kazimierz's countryside retains its old appearance. Farmers remain ever vigilant of Catastrophe warnings, hoping that the Catastrophes which could destroy their land and crops will never come. Of course, some changes have occurred. Nowadays, the tax collectors are generally not knights but employees of agencies under the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi. Meanwhile, merchants from the General Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by bodyguards and cash, come to buy up large quantities of crops. Salesmen also arrive to peddle enticing new industrial products, taking the cash away with them. The Kazimierzian countryside seems to be advancing, as if it's benefiting from the gifts of modern civilization.
While Kazimierz's cities have undergone startling transformations in the past few decades, in the countryside, the passage of time seems to have left no trace. Television and radio signals are luxuries of the nomadic cities; rural residents only hear the strange, unfamiliar names of competition knights when the buyers visit during harvest season. Their perception of knights has not changed, though one thing does puzzle them: In the past, the name of a knightly hero would be sung for a century. How is it that now, every year, people celebrate a different knight?

Every year during the wheat harvest, the Kazimierzian countryside welcomes visitors from the cities. In just a few days, farmer's exchange a year's entire harvest for a thin stack of banknotes, which they then quickly spend on cheap industrial products sold by traveling salesmen. In this way, the laborers of Kazimierz unwittingly find themselves trapped on their own land.
Noble Knights, or knightly nobles, are the most traditional knights who own territories. Before the establishment of the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz and the Knights Association, Noble Knight families often directly led a particular Knightclub. In times of war, they typically led their troops on the front lines; in times of peace, they would engage in political activities to enhance their influence and thereby strengthen their power. However, in the current era, Noble Knights are no longer permitted to maintain private armies and are subject to strict oversight by the Knights Association. Noble Knights are no longer able to sustain their enormous expenses through warfare. Instead, they have turned to investing in businesses and cultivating connections, hoping to maintain the last vestiges of their noble status.
Several decades ago, with the support of the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz, the National Council passed a series of laws collectively referred to as the "Campaign Knight Act". These laws reorganized the national military into teams of "Campaign Knights", and gave the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi full control of their formation, recruitment, and training. The laws also banned the private armies of the nobility and disbanded all noble Knightclubs. Moreover, the laws decreed that Noble Knights who joined the national military would lose their noble status, and all their noble privileges would be temporarily suspended until their military service ended. Thus, the Kazimierzian military, previously composed of Knightclubs trained by the various noble families, was transformed into dozens of Campaign Knightclubs, directly subordinate to the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi and operating on a conscription basis. In terms of organizational structure, Kazimierz's military shifted from an old-style noble military to a professional army employed by the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi. Many young members of knightly families voluntarily chose to become Campaign Knights, even though it meant forfeiting their noble status. Campaign Knights are outfitted with modern, practical equipment, thanks to Kazimierz's advanced economy. The Campaign Knightclubs mostly operate under the direct command of the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi. As such, they are deployed to handle difficult tasks in various geographic regions and must side with the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi in its struggle against the General Chamber of Commerce.
The Porcetanium Cuirass used by the Silverlance Pegasus Knightclub may not be as ornate as the gear of Competition Knights, but it showcases the pinnacle of Kazimierzian materials science.
Today, when people in Kazimierz mention the word "knight", they are most likely referring to the Competition Knights, that is, knights who participate in knight competitions. These sporting knights have largely replaced the classic warrior knights in the minds of the general public. The concept of "Knightclub" evolved into two distinct branches: "Campaign Knightclub" and "Competition Knightclub". Competition Knights are professional athletes who battle in knight competitions. The title of "knight" is not only a symbol of traditional nobility but also a certification of eligibility to participate in knight competitions. The Kazimierz Knights Association and the General Chamber of Commerce have designed numerous organizations and systems to support knight competitions, of which Competition Knightclubs are a crucial component. Unlike the Campaign Knightclub, which are responsible for preparing for and engaging in combat, Competition Knightclubs are primarily commercial outfits. The Competition Knightclubs recruit and train Competition Knights, manage their public image, and handle matters related to their participation in competitions. Only members of Competition Knightclubs and representatives of knightly families are eligible to participate in most knight competitions. Most of the funding for large Competition Knightclubs comes from mega-corporations and various financial consortia, while smaller squads often have to be self-sufficient.
The communication devices used by Competition Knights, inscribed with a simple combination of letters and numbers, officially make one a bearer of the knights' ancient glory.
If Kazimierz's noble system is likened to a large tree, then the knightly families are its branches, and the knights are the leaves and fruit. Knightly families are noble families certified by the Knights Association. Most knightly families are ancient houses that date back to the early days of the Adeptus Sprawiedliwi Kazimierz and the Knights
Association. The leaders of these knightly families are called "Knights Primus", responsible for managing the internal affairs of their families. Each Knight Primus must register their leadership status with the Knights Association. Those Knights Primus who become Campaign Knights retain this title, even though they lose their noble status, which allows them to continue managing their family's internal affairs. In recent years, the Kazimierz government has been actively working to reclaim these noble titles, with very few new knightly families being recognized. The Knights Association often justifies dissolving knightly families by citing reasons like "no Knight Primus" or "unable to afford the costs of maintaining noble status".
In the past, Kazimierzian knights spent most of their lives fighting on the battlefield or traveling to the next one. They easily amassed great wealth, but they had neither the time nor the energy to enjoy it. They simply reinvested it, as needed, into the next war. Hence, rumors began to circulate that many knights took their accumulated wealth with them to the afterlife, ensuring that even in death, they would be accompanied by treasures of honor. Catastrophes have made knightly tombs incredibly hard to find, but that has not stopped modern treasure hunters from eagerly searching for legendary relics.
There is no hierarchy among Kazimierz's noble families. In theory, all "knightly families" are noble groups of equal status. This design is rooted in the knights' military tradition. In the past, Knight Orders, which are large Knightclubs, often included multiple knightly families. After the Knightclubs determined that all noble families should be treated equally, they started using military ranks to minimize the impact of noble status on battlefield command. This reform has had a lasting impact; members of knightly families can now directly participate in knightly competitions but cannot claim any additional substantive privileges beyond this.
People are accustomed to referring to Kazimierz as the "A Country of Knights and Commerce". Placing knights before commerce is, of course, influenced by history and cultural traditions. However, the Kazimierz of today no longer relies on brute force alone to secure her place in the community of nations. Now, Kazimierz is sustained by its robust commerce and financial sector.
Economic theory has become so prevalent in Kazimierz that many people believe "modern economics" originated there. The earliest economic theories and research methods, in the modern sense, began in Victoria. Victorian scholars collected vast amounts of data, which they used to proposed various theories about the relationship between economics and society. When Kazimierzian merchants heard that someone in Victoria could predict market trends, they invested heavily into establishing research institutes and brought in Victorian scholars to support their businesses. Victorian experts soon noticed something was amiss—the Kazimierzian enterprises were applying these theories as rigid guidelines for business development without first collecting extensive data and conducting calculations. Surprisingly, the first entrepreneurs to implement these theories achieved remarkable results. Although the scholars could not fully grasp the underlying logic, they were encouraged by this success and began refining and promoting the theories. Thus, the modern field of "finance" was born, and it quickly spread throughout Kazimierz.
The massive flow of capital is the lifeblood of this nation, ceaselessly circulating at high speed, day and night, driven by the relentless operations of large enterprises. People frantically convert their assets into various financial instruments, hoping that the economic principles they've studied late into the night will pay off, granting them the wealth they've always dreamed of. Goods, real or imagined, are bought and sold, and over time, even things never meant to be commodities are slapped with price tags and turned into consumer products. Everything dissolves into the ocean called "consumption". The rapidly fluctuating indices on the stock exchange serve as our only reminder that it hasn't all come to an end yet.
In Kazimierz, the General Chamber of Commerce controls nearly every industry tied to social life. Healthcare, education, transportation, agriculture, and other industries are all managed by countless different contracting companies responsible for providing services to society. The one thing these companies have in common is their membership in the K.G.C.C.. The competition between these companies is fierce and relentless. While one might think that having multiple companies in the same field would lead to healthy competition and even improve the quality of their products or services, the reality often shows that each entity may resort to underhanded tactics to achieve a monopoly. In one quarter, the company managing the Grand Knight Territory's power supply changed three times, yet each company used the same equipment and personnel. "Acquire, then be acquired", this ancient Kazimierzian proverb, which once described conflicts between lords, now reflects
the battles between corporations.
When people from other regions learn about the instability of modern Kazimierzian society, they are often surprised that it hasn't already collapsed. When they discover the somewhat hostile relationship between the Kazimierzian government and the General Chamber of Commerce, they are even more perplexed. But when I asked the people living in Kazimierz about their outlook on the future, the responses were surprisingly optimistic: "Money begets money—I mean, money will always keep growing, that's just common sense, you know? As long as there are more Markis out there for people to grab and stuff into their pockets, us folks don't really have anything to worry about."
Although Kazimierz, as a nation, no longer relies on knights for her existence, the concept of "Kazimierz" remains inseparable from the knights. The people of Kazimierz take pride in the age-old knight culture. As they see it, knights have evolved from war machines roaming the battlefields to gladiators clashing in the arena. This transformation is seen as a sign of social progress. The knightly identity has been liberated from the chaos of war. It has become a part of orderly competitions guided by rules.
