There is a Yanese tale of unclean beings created by "distractions". Such beings are neither demon nor phantoms, and lack a permanent form.

When night falls, these unclean beings would secretly feed on the sentient subconsciousness and memories of their hosts. And thus, without any signs of poisoning or ailment, the hosts would die as their minds fade away.
